Good news for conservative activists in Michigan!  The Leadership Institute is once again offering a weekend training program at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI.  I attended this same program last year and it was awesome. The training provided me with the knowledge and confidence to form a Tea Party group in Livingston County Michigan.

This intensive two-day session is being offered on the weekend of March 13-14, 2010.  The total cost is just $30.00.  This includes the training, all meals, and lodging.  You cannot beat this deal – it is the best training value you’ll ever run across.  This flier contains more detail and contact information to enroll in the course.

(Note: This is an intensive two-day course.  If you decide to attend you really should plan on staying for both days.  In my opinion, the second day was the most informative.)

If I can provide you further information regarding my experiences with this course please email me with your contact information and I will call you to discuss.  You can email me at wes@limitgovnow.com

  • Your Contribution of $0.76 Makes a Difference

Concerned Americans are contributing both their money and their time to defeat leftist candidates throughout our great nation.  I am personally aware of friends and neighbors in Michigan who are volunteering their time and their money to help in the Massachusetts Senate race.  People understand the importance of this race to our nation to slowing the leftist agenda.

For the first time ever, my wife and I made campaign contributions to candidates who are outside of our own district, including candidates in other states.  We have contributed to Doug Hoffman in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, and to a PAC endorsing Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate race.

Whether one decides to contribute financially to support a political campaign, as we have, is a personal decision.  If you decide to contribute financially, too, I have one request:

Rather than making a contribution that is rounded off to the nearest dollar, add 76 cents.  For instance, if you decide to contribute $20.00, contribute $20.76 instead.  We’ve started doing this and think others should do it, too.  (We picked 76 cents in honor of the year of our nation’s independence, 1776.)

How could adding just 76 cents make a difference?

Adding 76 cents will serve as a potent symbol of support and puts the candidate on notice that the contributor is part of a larger movement.  It identifies the contribution as one that was made by someone who is a both a strong supporter of our Constitution and a strong supporter of fiscal responsibility.  In other words, the contribution was made by a Tea Partier.

If this idea grows, when a political candidate receives thousands of contributions ending in $0.76 he or she will know that constitutionally aware citizens are both supporting and watching.  If elected, the candidate will know we expect him or her to support legislation that expands individual freedom and reigns in runaway spending.  The candidate also will know that we are well organized and we won’t just go away after the election.  We will be watching.

Adding 76 cents also benefits the Tea Party movement by enabling us to identify our like-minded colleagues across a larger geographic area.  How so?  Campaign finance laws require each candidate to report contributions to state and federal election authorities.  The names and addresses of contributors along with the amounts they gave are a matter of public record.  So, an examination of campaign finance records enables Tea Partiers to readily identify allies for future election battles.

Being able to identify allies will be helpful later if we need to oust a political fraud.  Say, for instance, a Republican candidate promises fiscal responsibility during the campaign but spends like a drunken sailor after getting elected.  This candidate may think that as long as he spends a little bit less than a liberal rival, then you, the voter, are stuck between a rock and a hard place.  He may think you have no choice but to re-elect the lesser of two evils.  Well, this fiscal fraud is mistaken.  As long as the Tea Party movement stays organized the fraudulent candidate can be voted out of office during the next primary election season.

So, stand with me.  Add 76 cents to your next political campaign contribution – and tell everyone you know to add 76 cents, too.

Your 76 cents can make a difference in 2010, 2012 and beyond!

  • Arguments Against Obama Care - Flash Flyers Part II

The concept of flash flyers was discussed in an earlier post.  If you recall, flash flyers are one of the most effective means of conveying your message to an uninformed or undecided person.  I have added two additional flyers since then.

One flyer discusses the value the Federal Government places on a woman’s life relative to the value it places on a child’s life.  In my opinion both lives are equally precious.  However, the Feds do not agree.  Governmental actions indicate it is unconscionable to accept a mortality rate 4 out of 2,100,000 children (or 1 out of 525,000), while it is perfectly acceptable to let 1 out of 1904 women die from breast cancer.  If you do the math the Feds are concluding that a woman’s life is only 0.36% as valuable as a child’s life.  If government bureaucrats take over our health care you can expect more of these types of decisions.  To a bureaucrat you are just another number.

The next flyer discusses four key points.

    1)  How the politicians will force you out of your current health plan by forcing costly mandates on your company-provided plan.

    2)  The virtual certainty that socialized medicine will by vastly more expensive than what is currently estimated.

    3)  The Senate’s refusal to consider common sense methods of reducing health costs like increasing insurance competition and implementing tort reform.

    4)  The criminal penalties associated with this health bill if you do not knuckle under to the government and accept this new entitlement.

I have added a new page to my blog. The name of this page is Flash Flyers. This page contains newspaper articles and editorials discussing current events – such as Obama Care. I have copied the articles and added my own editorial comments in the margins. These comments elaborate on various issues discussed in the article/editorial. In essence, these comments help the reader to “read between the lines.”

The concept of flash flyers was presented during activist training I attended in Hillsdale, Michigan. Flash flyers are one of the most effective ways of informing the public about an important issue, such as Obama Care or Cap and Trade. The vast majority of Americans do not follow politics as closely as you and I; therefore, it is up to us to pass along information to counter the propaganda espoused by the Administration and their media allies.

Flash flyers are effective because they present information using a media company that average Americans are familiar with. The first flash flyer I have posted on my blog is a copy of an editorial from USA Today. Americans that are not politically active would generally view USA Today as respectable news source. All I have done with this flash flyer is present the USA Today point of view along with my commentary that point out issues that editors chose not to elaborate upon.

To maximize the effectiveness of a flash flyer I recommend that you print copies of this flyer and distribute them to your moderate/independent friends and neighbors. Experience has shown that a hard copy conveys the information in a more influential manner than an emailed copy. Another effective method of distribution would be to leave a handful of copies in the cafeteria at work for others to read.  Other ideas include leaving flyers in a restaurant, library, or an airport waiting area.

If time constraints prevent distribution of a hard copy then an email copy is acceptable. As a reminder, you should endeavor to pass this flash flyer on to more than just your conservative friends who already agree with your point of view, otherwise we are just preaching to the choir. Lastly, I encourage you to make your own flash flyers and help your circle of friends, “read between the lines.”

  • Left-Wing Obama Care Propaganda

Michigan Tea Party patriots. Here is a email from Joe Biden, distributed by Organizing for America. OFA is Obama’s propaganda arm. I thought readers might be interested in the distorted liberal flak being thrown up to disguise their true intentions. Far-left liberals do not care about your health care, they only care about their political power. If they truly cared about costs they would restrain malpractice suits, open up the insurance industry to competition across state borders, provide portability of insurance policies, increase health savings accounts, etc.

    Friend –

We’ve got a fight on our hands. Powerful insurance companies are pulling out all the stops to defeat the President’s plan for health reform. They’re spending seven million bucks a week on lobbyists, blanketing the country with deceptive TV ads, and just funded two high-profile “reports” to distort what reform would mean for you.

I know their game. I was in the Senate the last time health reform came around, and I saw the special interests savage our efforts. Frankly, under the old rules of Washington they were nearly impossible to beat. But now, thanks to you, the rules are changing. All the lies, scare tactics and lobbyist shake-downs in the world are no match for the incredible work of Organizing for America supporters like you. That’s exactly what frightens them so much — and it’s what Barack and I are counting on.

After decades of false starts, we’re now just a short time from finally passing real reform. Every member of Congress will soon have to cast their vote. As real change draws near, you can bet the insurance companies will hold nothing back. That means OFA will need the extra resources to beat back whatever attack they can dream up next. Here’s the bottom line: it’s not time to let up — it’s time to double down.

Please donate $5 or more to power OFA’s fight for change as we head into the final round.

When I talk about you changing the rules in Washington, here’s what I mean: This week, crucial negotiations on Capitol Hill are shaping a comprehensive reform proposal. At the same time, the insurance companies’ phony reports are grabbing headlines and their lobbyists are twisting arms. But your work is keeping them from setting us back.

On Tuesday, OFA supporters around the country organized more than 1,000 local outreach events and generated an astounding 330,000 calls to Congress from constituents telling their representatives that “it’s time to deliver.” From my years in Congress and my conversations with Senate colleagues this week, I can tell you with confidence that your message broke through and you helped keep us on track.

If this fight were only about guaranteeing the choice of secure, quality, affordable care for every American, it would be worth everything we could throw at it. But as Barack reminded us this week, this fight for change is now about something even bigger: a test of whether or not “we as a nation are capable of tackling our toughest challenges, if we can serve the national interest despite the unrelenting efforts of the special interests; if we can still do big things in America.”

I believe we can. And Barack believes we can. But what really matters is whether you believe we can. If you do, now is the moment to make it happen. Please contribute today:

  • Conservative Activist Training for Michigan Tea Party Goers

There is an opportunity to develop and hone our fighting skills as we battle the left in the arena of ideas.  An organization called the Leadership Institute is conducting a weekend training class for conservative activists.  The Leadership Institute, a non-profit organization, is conducting a two-day session on November 14-15 at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI.

The focus of this class is to train college age adults to becoming effective conservative activists and organizers, and perhaps consider a future run for public office.  As a 50-something activist I was somewhat concerned that the focus is off topic for someone who is “over-the-hill.”  Daryn  Iwicki (mailto:diwicki@limail.us), a representative of the Leadership Institute, assuaged my concerns when he emailed me and said that all age groups are welcome.  He also informed me that he recently trained a group of non-college students in Texas.

The cost of this training is $30 if you sign up ahead of time.  I signed up last night.  The price includes meals and housing, although I did not inquire about the housing specifics.  I am guessing the housing arrangements could be a dorm room—but that is just a guess.  If you do not sign up ahead of time, the cost is $60.

My wife and I have past experience with the Leadership Institute as we both attended a four hour session when we were in Washington, D.C. for the 912 March.  They did an excellent job and we both concluded that it was time well spent.  I am looking at this upcoming session as an opportunity to increase our effectiveness and as an opportunity to expand our network.  Expanding our network is critical if we are to expand our political influence.  Further, we need to work with the future of our country, our younger generations, to help them combat the socialist propaganda that is pervasive in our educational institutions.

If you decide to attend, I would be more than happy to offer you a ride.  I will be departing from Hartland, MI.  Contact me a wes@limitgovnow.com. According to a sample agenda, the course runs from 8 AM to 11 PM, yes 15 hours long, on the first day.  The second day is easier; it is less than 12 hours, running from 8:30 AM to 8 PM.  These lengthy hours suggest to me that this organization delivers some serious training.  Are we ready for boot camp?  I know I am!

  • Another Free Sign or Bumper Sticker Against Obama Policies

A new sign or bumper sticker voicing opposition to Obama’s tax policies has just been posted. The new message – “Obama Attacks Success,” with attacks spelled ATAX.  As with all socialists, Obama’s policies focus upon punishing acheivement. He apparantly fancies himself to be another Robin Hood, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. If only more Americans knew the true story behind this folk hero. In fact, the rich that were robbed gained their wealth through confiscatory taxes of ordinary citizens. So in essence Mr. Hood was part of the limited government movement, fighting against the overbearing power of the kingdom. Robin Hood fought and prevailed against burdensome taxes, and we will too. Please refer to the instructions provided in an earlier post for directions regarding this download.   This free download provides you with an inexpensive way to make your voice be head.

  • What's Next for Limited Government Activists After 912 March on Washington Tea Party

    Wes Nakagiri 9:09 pm on September 28, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply
    Tags: , tactics,

The recent Tea Parties have successfully mobilized millions of people to voice strong opposition to Obama Care. Collectively my wife and I have attended rallies across the state of Michigan in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Battle Creek, Brighton, and Troy. We also proudly attended the 912 March in Washington, D.C. During these events we chatted with numerous people who, like us, have serious concerns regarding the trajectory of our country. Everywhere we have traveled citizens are concerned with the growth in government and the inherent loss of individual freedom that accompanies it. They are fearful of what kind of nation will be left for their children given the socialist tendencies of the Obama administration.

More than just expressing their great dissatisfaction with the current political leaders, everyone I spoke with expressed a desire to do more to fight off the left-wing attacks on our nation’s heritage. They vowed to keep up the fight well past the conclusion of the Tea Party rallies. While nearly all expressed a yearning to increase their contributions beyond what they have done to date, many were not 100% sure exactly what they might do next. What is the best course of action? What can be done to maximize the likelihood of success, not just now but well into the future?

Tea Party attendees I spoke with were hesitant to necessarily embrace the GOP as the answer to our problems. Yes it is virtually certain that the Republican Party wouldn’t adopt Obama’s far left policies but it is not a slam dunk that government growth would be reversed. Many recalled their disgust with the growth in spending during the Bush administration, even when Team R controlled all the levers of power. So what is the answer? How do advocates of limited government best proceed?

I will lay out my answers to these questions over the next few blog posts. My answers will not be presented as a series of detailed tactics, rather I will present an overall strategy that addresses key points covered during a seminar presented by The Leadership Institute on the evening before the 912 March in Washington, D.C. The instructor, Mr. Mike Rothfeld, President of Saber Communications, shared his insights regarding the ins and outs of political campaigns. A campaign veteran, Mr. Rothfeld, provided an insider’s view of the numerous facets one must consider as part of a political campaign. Of the many concepts Mr. Rothfeld spoke about, I’d like to elaborate upon those that are key to my strategy. Note that this proposed strategy doesn’t require us, the Tea Party movement, to necessarily field candidates immediately. It provides us with time to further build our grass roots power and political influence.

To leverage the great success we have had thus far it is my belief that we need to coalesce around a strategy that brings together the following concepts:

    1.  In order to be politically respected we must be politically feared. We have done a good job thus far as politicians do fear angry voters. That Congress has delayed voting on Obama Care is a sure sign that Washington politicians, fearing for their jobs, view us with respect, at least for now. However, more must be done and it must be sustained. We must not only sustain, we must increase our recently acquired level of political respect. The entrenched politicians are betting against our staying power.

    2.  We need large numbers of people and they must be organized and coordinated. The Tea Party movement certainly has the numbers. Rallies across this great country of ours frequently drew crowds numbering in the thousands, sometimes in the tens of thousands. Our successful 912 March on Washington proved to the politicians that there are millions of motivated voters ready to take back our country. Looking forward, can we build upon our organization, increasing both our power and size?

    3.  We need funding, in a large enough amount, to use as leverage to hold our politicians feet to the fire. A superior level of funding enhances our political respect. Are we willing to part with more of our treasure to fight for our beliefs?

    4.  We must have credible alternative candidates waiting in the wings just in case our representatives fall off the wagon. Our political leaders must know we are serious about reining in the growth of government. Having serious alternatives in key districts will help keep our legislators on the right path. However, if their voting record doesn’t match their rhetoric then we need to have the ability, with our alternate candidates, to vote them out of office during the primary season.

To summarize, the foundation of my proposal relies upon four concepts:

    • Sustained political respect.
    • Large and well coordinated ranks.
    • Adequate funding.
    • Viable alternative candidates.

I will fill in the blanks with more details in upcoming posts. Share your comments in public by commenting on this post or in private by emailing wes@limitgovnow.com.

    Not Your Dad's Bumper Sticker

This is Not Your Dad's Bumper Sticker!

Are political bumper stickers effective? Up until recently my answer would have been no, bumper stickers are not effective. As a matter of fact I have never placed a sticker on the bumper of any car I’ve owned because I didn’t want the hassle of removing a stale message after the political campaigning concluded. In my estimation the time it would take me to remove the sticker outweighed the benefit derived from “getting out the message.”

Times have certainly changed my outlook. The fear of socialism has motivated me to do more than just complain about left-wing policies. I started attending Tea Party protests, but I thought that I had the capability to do more. As one who believes in the virtues of conservatism and individual self-determination I felt the need to ratchet up my personal effort and make my voice heard in a more public manner. Thus, I came to the conclusion that I’m going to use the bumper sticker strategy to advertise my disdain for all things socialist. Businesses that advertise can impact people’s thoughts and perceptions. Think about the impact that Nike advertising and marketing has upon the American marketplace. Better yet, think about the impact that marketing had upon Obama’s image during the 2008 Presidential campaign. If every third vehicle on the road had an anti-socialist bumper sticker do you think it would affect the thinking of others? I do!

Having decided to use mobile signage I wanted to maximize its effectiveness. Maximizing effectiveness meant two things to me. First, I wanted a LARGE sticker so I could reach out and touch as many passersby as possible. We won’t defeat socialism by just politely whispering our message. We need to show the undecided in our midst that the vast majority of Americans hold center-right views not Marxist-leftist views. Second, I wanted the flexibility to change my message to keep up with the issues of the day. In addition to ObamaCare, I wanted to be able to speak out on issues such as Cap and Trade, Illegal Immigration, Terrorism, etc. I didn’t want to advertise a stale message that had lost both relevance and popularity. Speaking of a message that has been losing relevance and popularity can anybody say “OBAMA ’08.” If I had been suckered into voting for Obama in ’08 I’d make damn sure I peeled off the bumper sticker, disinfected the area, and shredded the evidence by now!  Although, maybe if I left the sticker in place my car might qualify as a clunker!

After a few prototypes I came up with a bumper sticker that met my two criteria. Actually it’s more like a billboard than a bumper sticker. Further, I designed this mobile signage with the hope that you’ll copy this cost effective sign and help spread the word. I can also, at no cost to you, alter the size of the sticker and the message on it. More detail on this later.

I use a graphic arts software package to print my message across several sheets of transparency material—like the transparencies used for overhead projectors. The graphic arts software enables me to print across as many sheets as I want while not having to worry about whether or not the lettering will line up correctly on adjacent transparencies. The software seamlessly prints from one page to the next. The sign, or should I say billboard, shown on the back of my van was printed using six sheets of 8.5 x 11 inch material. The letters are printed in 500 font which produces capital letters that are about six inches tall and lower case letters that are about four inches tall. This bumper sticker on steroids is easily readable from over 100 feet away.

When I go to a restaurant I try to park in full view of the entrance so I can watch the expression of patrons as they come and go. There’s a sense of personal satisfaction, as I’m eating breakfast, watching people point with amazement at the equivalent of a political neon sign attached to my vehicle.

Longevity was a big consideration when I came up with this design. Maximizing the life of the sign is one reason for using transparency material as it is made of plastic and is thus waterproof. Using transparency material also enabled me to incorporate another life-extending feature in that I print on the “backside” of the clear sheet material. Printing on the backside protects the lettering from direct exposure to moisture from rain or dew. This moisture protection design feature is made possible by the use of the graphic arts software. In addition to printing across several pages, the software allows lettering to be printed in a mirror image fashion. Using this mirror imaging feature, lettering printed on the backside of the transparency shows up as normal text when viewed from the front side.

Longevity, durability, and size are certainly strengths of this design, but what about cost effectiveness? I believe this base has been covered also. You do not need to purchase any software to print these signs because I have converted the graphic arts file into a .PDF file. You can download the .PDF file and then print it at home using your own printer. Downloadable files are stored in the page named Bumper Stickers (Download Files). If you would rather have a sign with your own customized message or size just email your request to bumpersticker@limitgovnow.com.  You can also submit your request by posting a comment.

Here is a summary list or materials needed to print your own billboard:

    1. Print using a laser printer. Ink from an ink jet printer will rinse off with water. Even though the lettering is not directly exposed to rain, condensation could form and wash away your text. If you don’t have a laser printer print the .PDF file with an ink jet printer and then copy this print out onto overhead transparencies using a standard copier.
    2. Purchase the lowest cost transparency material that is compatible with the high temperatures associated with a laser printer.   Retail office supply stores appear to be around $30 for a box of 100. If you belong to Sam’s Club you can get it for about $10 for a box of 50.
    3. Use clear packaging tape to join adjacent transparencies together.
    4. Attach the sign to glass using packaging tape. If you have tinted glass (which most cars do) you will need to place a white background in back of the transparency material. The white background maximizes contrast with the black lettering and increases visibility. A white plastic kitchen-size garbage bag works well for this background.
    5. Packaging tape or magnets can be used to secure the sign to metal surfaces.
    6. All in all, I estimate that it will cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 for a billboard-style sign that delivers your customized message in a truly noticeable fashion.

In the four days I’ve had my current sign (Euthanize ObamaCare) I’ve received thumbs up from numerous other motorists and no extended middle fingers. So, I know I’m making a difference. You can easily make a difference too. Increase the reach of the Tea Party effort and use a customized billboard to help influence the undecided by giving them the “right” perspective.
